Itinerary

Day 1 Osaka
Arrive in Osaka, an eclectic city that contrasts modern life with a deep-rooted history, from the neon lights of the Dotonbori district to the iconic landmark of Osaka Castle. Tonight, enjoy a tour to sample the best of Osaka’s exceptional food scene, with delicacies including tempura, Wagyu beef and the must-try local speciality, Okonomiyaki savoury pancakes.

Day 2 Osaka to Okayama
Today, travel by train to Okayama and spend the day exploring this charming city on a self-guided tour. Begin by visiting Okayama Castle, known as ‘Crow Castle’ due to its black exterior. After, enjoy a walk around the stunning Koraku-en Gardens, situated on an island in the Asahi-gawa River.

Day 3 Okayama to Takamatsu
Board a train and ferry to the artistic island of Naoshima. The three art museums here house works by world-famous artists including James Turrell and Claude Monet. Perhaps stop by the iconic red and yellow pumpkin sculptures by Yayoi Kusama or visit one of the town’s fascinating Art House projects, converting abandoned house into contemporary art exhibitions. After exploring the island, continue your journey by taking the ferry to Takamatsu (payable locally).

Day 4 Takamatsu
Discover one of Japan’s splendid historical gardens, the Ritsurin Koen. These incredible grounds were landscaped in the 1620s and are a wonderful place to unwind. Visit a local bonsai farm and learn how these charming, little trees are grown.

Day 5 Takamatsu to Omishima
Take the train to Imabari where you will meet a guide and pick up e-bikes to ride a section of the famous Shimanami Kaido cycling route. Cross several suspension bridges on this 25 mile route over the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, taking in the breathtaking beauty as you pedal your way to Omishima.

Day 6 Omishima to Hiroshima
This morning board a ferry to Tadanoumi. A guide will take you to the picturesque city of Takehara, where you can wander well-preserved Edo-period streets, learn the art of calligraphy and visit a local distillery for a sake tasting. Continue to Hiroshima for the night.

Day 7 Hiroshima & Miyajima
Begin the day with a visit to the deeply moving Peace Memorial Museum and Park to learn about the devastating impact of the 1945 atomic bomb. Later take the ferry across to the scenic island of Miyajima. Explore the many shrines and temples of the island before returning to Hiroshima.

Day 8 Hiroshima to Kyoto
Journey via train to Kyoto. Upon arrival immerse yourself in traditional customs with a tea ceremony. Dress in an authentic kimono and learn the meaning behind this delicate ritual before sampling the tea.

Day 9 Kyoto
Discover the delights of this cultural city on a self-guided tour today. Highlights include Nijo Castle, the golden pavilion of Kinkakuji and Kiyomizu Temple where you can enjoy amazing views of the surrounding natural scenery.
