Itinerary
Take the train to Nagano to explore the 7th Century Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan’s most popular places of worship, before continuing by local train to Shibu Onsen. Settle into your ryokan for the next two nights. Why not join the locals by strolling down ‘Spa Street’ dressed in your yukata robe as you head for a soak in one of the town’s many public onsen?
Day 2 Shibu
Onsen The hot springs in the hills around Shibu Onsen act as a magnet to entire troops of macaques. Affectionately known as ‘snow monkeys’ and accustomed to humans, their amusing antics as they frolic in and around the warm water can be viewed from close quarters. Later consider taking the bus to the charming nearby town of Obuse, where the artist Hokusai, creator of one of Japan’s most iconic images – The Great Wave, spent the latter years of his life.
Day 3 Shibu Onsen to Tokyo
There is time this morning for another leisurely soak in an onsen before taking the train back to Tokyo.
