Day 1 Fly to Munich, Germany
Arrive in Munich, meet your tour director and transfer to the historic city of Salzburg, Austria, your home for the next three nights.
Day 2 Salzburg, Austria
Until 200 years ago, Salzburg was an independent city state ruled by a series of archbishops who imported some of the finest architects from across Europe. The result is a beautiful collection of monuments that you’ll visit on a guided tour this morning. The afternoon is free to explore at your own pace.
Day 3 Salzkammergut
This morning’s scenic drive takes you to the heart of the mesmerising Austrian Lake District. First stop is Mondsee, a charming town on the shores of Salzkammergut before heading to Traunsee, another spectacular lake. Continue to St Wolfgang and break for lunch to enjoy some free time, where you may choose to take a train to the summit of the Schafberg Mountain high above. Later, travel back to Salzburg after a wonderful day exploring this beautiful area.
Day 4 Salzburg to Kaprun
Start the day with a visit to Hellbrunn Palace, a spectacular 17th Century complex just outside the city. The gardens are especially impressive with a number of beautiful fountains. Continue to Kaprun, close to the lakeside resort of Zell am See and your base for the next four nights.
Day 5 Krimml
A twisting road through picturesque woodland and perfectly manicured pastures brings you to Krimml waterfall, the highest waterfall in Europe. The amazing power of this natural wonder is a fine sight and there’s time to climb the stepped walkway to the very top, listening to the roar of the enormous volumes of water the whole way.
Day 6 Grossglockner
Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of Europe’s finest engineering feats. There are spectacular views throughout the journey to Hochtor pass, the highest point of the road at 2,500m above sea level. This is rugged Alpine terrain where you may hear the distinctive whistle of a marmot or spot sure-footed ibex, while plucky cyclists often tackle the tough ascent. Enjoy the panoramic views and fresh mountain air before descending back to Kaprun.
Day 7 Kaprun
Today is at leisure to explore the area at your own pace. It’s worth spending time at Zell am See where you can take a boat trip, or the brave might choose an invigorating swim during the summer months. You can also take the cable car to the top of Schmittenhohe for great views and the gateway to many walking trails.
