Day 1 Fly to Athens
Fly to Athens and on arrival transfer to your centrally located hotel. After time to settle in, get to know your fellow travellers over a welcome drink and dinner this evening.
Day 2 Athens
The Greek capital, Athens, is packed full of unforgettable sights. Take in all the main highlights today, including the Panathenaic Stadium, site of the first modern Olympics, the Old Parliament building, originally built as a royal palace and the city’s crowning glory, the Acropolis, which stands high on a rocky outcrop.
Day 3 Athens to Nafpaktos
Leave Athens and journey across the famous Corinth Canal. Stop to take in the views of this narrow, steep-sided passage before continuing to the ancient city of Epidaurus. See the immense Theatre of Epidaurus, the best-preserved in Greece, then continue to Nafplio, a pretty seaport town dominated by the Castle of Palamidi. Take a stroll through the medieval Old Town to see well-preserved neoclassical mansions, before your tour continues across the impressive Rio-Antirio Bridge to Nafpaktos.
Day 4 Trikorfo
Today visit the mountain village of Trikorfo, and tour the local monastery. Afterwards head to the small seaside village of Glifada, to board a traditional boat for a short cruise to Trizonia, the only inhabited island of the Corinthian Gulf. With no cars and many peaceful beaches, this pretty fishing village is a great place to enjoy a late lunch in one of the local tavernas.
Day 5 Olympia
Travel to Olympia, the site of the original Olympic Games in 776BC. Set on the banks of the River Alfios, take your time to explore the Temple of Zeus, the Palaestra, where Greek athletes practised wrestling, and the workshop of Phidias, a Greek sculptor, painter and architect. The Olympia Archaeological Museum is also well worth a visit.
Day 6 Nafpaktos
Today is free to spend at leisure, or join an optional excursion on an the DiakoftoKalavryta Railway. This traditional cog train, takes in stunning views of towering mountains and the surrounding countryside as it passes through a gorge and several tunnels.
Day 7 Nafpaktos to Athens
Leave Nafpaktos behind and journey by road to Delphi, one of the most sacred sites in Greece, and said to be the place where heaven and earth meet. Admire the Sanctuary of Apollo, where pilgrims leave offerings to the gods, and the Treasury of the Athenians, where the offerings were stored before visiting the museum of Delphi. This evening, gather together for a farewell dinner in Athens’ Old Town.
Day 8 Athens to the UK
Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
