Contrasts of Crete

Days 1-3  Chania  
Fly to Chania, a captivating gem nestled on the northwest coast of Crete and pick up your car. Take time to wander the cobbled alleys, largely unchanged since the historical Venetian occupation. Spend the next few days venturing beyond the city limits and discover the picturesque Cretan countryside. Drive through olive groves and vineyards and explore the magnificent beaches of western Crete, from the breathtaking turquoise waters of Balos beach to the pink sands of Elafonissi. If you are feeling adventurous, take a tour through the White Mountains to Omalos, and hike the hidden Gorge of Samaria, the largest and most impressive gorge in Greece.  

Day 4  Chania to Elounda  
Head out in your car across the scenic landscape of Crete, where rugged mountain peaks meet the azure blue Mediterranean. As you approach the city of Heraklion, stop by the archaeological site of Knossos Palace. The largest Minoan Palace offers a vital glimpse into the complex culture and civilisation that flourished on this island. It features elaborate frescoes alongside monumental architecture and is synonymous with the Greek myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. After exploring this historic site, head into Heraklion for lunch, a city defined by its blend of ancient history and modern urban life, before continuing on to Elounda.

Days 5-10  Elounda  
Relax at one of Crete’s fabulous resorts. Enjoy the laidback pace of life, delicious Greek cuisine, wonderful beaches and glistening waters. Perhaps take a day trip to the fortified island of Spinalonga, once a venetian fortress turned leper colony and now a unique open-air museum.

Day 11  Fly home  
Drive to Heraklion airport and drop off your car in time for your flight home.
