Cycling the Camino de Santiago

One of the oldest pilgrim routes in the world, the Camino de Santiago is a beautiful rural route. The hilly terrain ensures some challenging climbs that are guaranteed to get the blood pumping.

  • Style: Guided Small Group Cycling Tour
  • Duration: 8 days/7 nights
  • Starts in: Leon
  • Santiago de Compostela
  • Leon
  • Molinaseca

Day 1 Leon
Arrive into Oviedo and transfer to the town of Leon where your cycling tour begins.

Day 2 Leon to Astorga
Begin riding through quaint villages across the plains of Castilla, and then stop for lunch at Hospital del Orbigo. Continue to Astorga, a lovely walled town and your home for the night.

Day 3 Astorga to Molinaseca
Arguably the most beautiful ride of the tour. You will leave the Castillan plains behind and climb gradually into the mountains of Leon, as high as Monte de la Cruz de Ferro at 1,505m altitude. En route you’ll see Castrillo de los Polvazares, known for its beautiful architecture, and the pretty mountain village of Acebo. Afterwards, enjoy stunning valley views as you descend to Molinaseca.

Day 4 Molinaseca to O’Cebreiro
Today’s ride is full of stunning views. The day starts with a flat 15 mile section before a short climb to Villafranca where you can explore the picturesque town square and its collection of monuments. Afterwards, make a final push to the top of the mountain and the small village of O’Cebreiro. The views of the surrounding valleys are truly beautiful.

Day 5 O’Cebreiro to Sarria
The scenery this morning is populated by a number of traditional agricultural villages. Local families often have a small plot of land, used for growing vegetables and tending cattle. Galician language and culture thrives in this area, and it’s a delight to see the traditional ways of the villages en route to Sarria.

Day 6 Sarria to Palas de Rei
Follow attractive tree lined paths through the rural landscape to Portomarin, rebuilt as a hilltop town in the 1950s. Enjoy lunch before a tough 8 mile climb and then a descent into Palas de Rei, a small town full of pilgrim spirit.

Day 7 Palas de Rei to Santiago de Compostela
The final day of cycling includes a number of short ascents and descents through the Galician countryside. Eventually you’ll reach Monte de Gozo, from where you’ll follow the narrow city streets to Plaza del Obradoiro. This marks journey’s end for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims over the years. Take some time to admire the spectacular cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
