Itinerary
Day 1 London, UK to Basel, Switzerland
This morning board the Eurostar at Kings Cross St Pancras to Paris, connecting onto your train to Basel. The train journey winds through the Burgundy countryside and the hills and villages of rural France before crossing the border into Switzerland. On arrival head to the old town to discover the medieval churches and brightly painted fountains. In the evening call in to one of the many restaurants to sample the local produce and indulge in some people watching.
Day 2 Basel
Thanks to its famous international art fair, Basel has long been known as a centre for art and architecture. Spend the day exploring the remarkable buildings, where medieval buildings sit alongside dramatic modern architecture from the world’s leading architects. There are few cities in the world so architecturally unique! As you explore, admire the city as a gallery, and the numerous public artworks spread around the city. In the afternoon why not discover the work of pioneering sculptor Jean Tinguely and his marvellous machinery, the Kunstmuseum’s masterpieces by Van Gogh and Monet or catch a tram out to the renowned Foundation Beyeler and its extensive contemporary art collection.
Day 3 Basel
Pack your passport and hop on to green tram number 8 to Weil am Rhein, Germany, home to the spectacular Vitra design museum, which explores the history and development of design past, present and future, all set in a remarkable building designed by “starchitect” Frank Gehry. Return to Switzerland and relax on the sun-drenched banks of Kleinbasel on the Rhine. In summer months watch out for locals swimming in the river with their clothes in brightly coloured “Wickelfish” floating swimbags. From spring to early autumn call into one of the many riverside buvettes- open air restaurants overlooking the rivers and parks of this bustling city.
Day 4 Basel
Enjoy your last opportunity to leisurely meander through the medieval streets of this enchanting city before boarding your train home.
