Itinerary
Arrive in Wengen at any time.
Day 2 Wengen
To make the most of Wengen’s spectacular surroundings, we suggest that you take the cable car to Männlichen, a superb vantage point from which to admire the soaring peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. From here, panoramic paths lead to another classic vantage point, Kleine Scheidegg, the traditional observation point from where tourists can watch the progress of climbers on the Eiger’s north face. Return by train to Wengen.
Day 3 Wengen
Descend by train from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen, with spectacular waterfall views, before a cable car ride to Grütschalp. From here you follow the gently meandering route of the historic railway which traverses the mountainside to the quaint car-free village of Mürren and its classic sun-blackened timber chalets. Enjoy its spectacular cliff-top setting before descending by train back to Grütschalp, and from there returning to Wengen by cable car and train. You have the option, during the course of the day, for an extra cable car ride from Mürren, to the top of the Schilthorn – a spectacular peak with a revolving restaurant and James Bond museum.
Day 4 Wengen
Head by train to Interlaken (the region’s hub, sitting between Lakes Thun and Brienz, and meaning literally ‘Between the lakes’) to catch a boat to the pretty village of Iseltwald. From here, a shady path follows the lakeshore east to reach a funicular leading to the historic Grand Hotel of Giessbach. You can earn your tea and cake on the hotel terrace by exploring the series of waterfalls, which cascade nearby – there’s even an impressive path behind one of them, for the full effect. Return from Giessbach by boat and train.
Day 5 Wengen to Beckenried
Leaving Wengen, take the train to Stans and here connect with a bus to Beckenried.
Day 6 Beckenried
Tremendous views north across Lake Lucerne are a highlight of this route, which begins with a cable car ride from Beckenried to the mountain hamlet of Klewenalp. Drink in the vistas which stretch across the waters to the mountains and plains beyond, then amble gently across alp and through forest to the Stockhütte cable car. This makes light work of the descent to Emmetten, from where you take a bus back to Beckenried.
Day 7 Beckenried
Catch the local bus to nearby Sagendorf to begin this route through idyllic Swiss farming country with magnificent lake views, to reach Rütli. This lakeside meadow is thought of as the heart of the country and is where, at the end of the 13th century, an oath was sworn between representatives of the founding cantons of Switzerland. Return by boat to Beckenried.
Day 8 Beckenried
After breakfast your self guided walking tour comes to an end, depart at any time.
