Days 1-2 Cochin
Arrive in Cochin and enjoy some free time to explore the city. On day two, take an orientation walk of Fort Kochi. In the late afternoon, take in a performance of Kathakali dancing where characters paint their faces and wear elaborate costumes.
Day 3 Cochin to Kalpetta
This morning, take a train to Calicut then drive through rolling hills covered with tea plantations to Kalpetta.
Day 4 Kalpetta
Spend today at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary where you may spot tigers, jungle cat and elephants. Later, visit the Edakkal Caves, believed to have been a shelter used by Neolithic people.
Days 5-6 Kalpetta to Mysore
Continue to historical Mysore and imagine life as a maharaja on a guided tour including the fascinating Chamundeshwari Temple.
Day 7 Mysore to Mahabalipuram
Travel to Chennai by train before continuing by road to the small town of Mahabalipuram, site of the spectacular 7th Century Shore Temple, a World Heritage Site.
Day 8 Mahabalipuram
Spend today exploring the town’s remarkable monuments by bicycle, on foot or by guided tour. Later today, relax by the pool or enjoy a walk along the beach.
Day 9 Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry
Set off for Pondicherry, formerly a French colony and an important trading town. Admire the colonial architecture while strolling the elegant boulevards.
Day 10 Pondicherry to Madurai
Travel by road to the town of Madurai, home to many striking temples.
Day 11 Madurai
Enjoy an early morning cycle rickshaw tour of Madurai, passing by fruit and vegetable market and stopping at the famous Sri Meenakshi Temple.
Day 12 Madurai to Periyar
Continue to the spice capital of India, where you can enjoy a tour of the plantations and a tea factory.
Day 13 Periyar to Backwaters
Travel into Kerala’s backwaters to a village homestay on a small island. Explore the island and observe local life with a chance to meet and talk with the people that live here. Admire the sunset on a peaceful small boat ride this evening.
Day 14 Backwaters to Cochin
Spend this morning with a local family teaching you how to cook traditional food or simply explore more of life on the backwaters. Later, board a private boat for a trip through sleepy canals before hopping on a bus back to Cochin where your tour comes to an end this afternoon.
