Day 1 Delhi
Arrive in Delhi and transfer to your hotel. Meet with your fellow travellers and tour leader at a welcome meeting this evening.
Day 2 Delhi to Varanasi
Head out on a walking tour of Delhi, visiting Chandni Chowk and Connaught Place along the way. Take a bicycle rickshaw ride and explore Old Delhi, there will be some free time for more sightseeing on your own before boarding your overnight train to Varanasi.
Day 3 Varanasi
Arrive into Varanasi early morning and head straight to your hotel to freshen up before delving into this holy city, one of the world’s oldest. Wander the narrow laneways and backstreets on a guided walking tour, later watch the world pass by at the ghats. The evening is free to do as you wish.
Day 4 Varanasi to Agra
Rise early this morning as you take a boat ride to experience one of the highlights of your trip, watching the sunrise over the Ganges. Witness pilgrims bathing, cremation fires and riverside haircuts, the rest of the day is free to explore before boarding your overnight train to Agra.
Day 5 Agra
Your train arrives into Agra early this morning, on arrival head to the most iconic site in India, the Taj Mahal. Spend the day exploring Agra on a motorised rickshaw trip, maybe stop by to see the Agra Fort nearby. The remainder of the day is free.
Day 6 Agra to Jaipur
Jump on a bus and head to Rajasthan’s pink capital, Jaipur. Arrive in the afternoon and stop off at Hawa Mahal before heading to your hotel. Later venture out on a walking tour of the old city.
Day 7 Jaipur
A hot air balloon experience is one of the highlights of Jaipur for many travellers and can be done in the morning over Jaipur between the months of September and June (your tour leader can give you more details). Enjoy a guided tour of the medieval Amber Fort later this morning, be sure to have grab another cup of chai before settling in for this evening’s overnight train journey to Rishikesh.
Day 8 Rishikesh
Arrive into the spiritual town of Rishikesh, lying in the foothills of the Himalayas. Take an orientation walk of the town before spending some free time to roam at your own leisure. Rishikesh is a great place to relax and seek a little enlightenment. In your free time, why not visit The Beatles Ashram – a spiritual retreat inhabited by the famous band in the sixties. Later in the evening perhaps take a stroll along the holy Ganges River.
Day 9 Rishikesh
Get relaxing this morning with a one hour yoga class followed by a light and tasty breakfast of masala dosa. If you’re feeling adventurous, may take the optional white-water raft down the Ganges. In the afternoon join the group for a walk in the jungle nearby. Experience sleeping under the stars just outside of Rishikesh in a fixed campsite surrounded by nature and mountain views.
Day 10 Rishikesh to Delhi
Spend a leisurely morning at the campsite before heading back to Rishikesh, spend the afternoon wandering around the town before boarding your evening train to Delhi.
Day 11 Delhi to Hyderabad
Leave the north behind and start the second leg of your journey as you head south. Fly to Hyderabad and transfer to your hotel, later in the evening meet with your new tour leader and fellow travellers, after the meeting head out to sample some local food – Hyderabad is famous for its biryani.
Day 12 Hyderabad
Learn more about this southern Indian city on a guided walking tour. Later visit the Ramoji Film City and discover the weird and wonderful world of Bollywood.
Day 13 Hyderabad
Visit Charminar, also known as the Four Minarets and one of the most recognisable monuments of Hyderabad. Later this evening board your overnight train to Chennai.
Day 14 Hyderabad to Puducherry
Arrive into Chennai this morning and continue by private vehicle onto Puducherry via Mamallapuram. Stop off at Mamallapuram to see the sights including the Shore Temple overlooking the Bay of Bengal, carved from single large rocks in the 7th Century. Spend the night in coastal Puducherry.
Day 15 Puducherry
Explore the city of Puducherry (Pondicherry), once a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, which still has a strong French influence, discover this cultural mix on a sightseeing tour and visit the French quarter as well as Arbindo Ashram and Ganesh Temple. In your free time perhaps take a stroll along the beach promenade.
Day 16 Puducherry to Madurai
Start today with a bus ride to Villupuram and then a train journey onto Madurai, on arrival take an orientation walk around Madurai city, later this evening your tour leader can take you on an optional walk around the markets where you can sample some local street foods and perhaps witness the art of a chai walla.
Day 17 Madurai
Spend some time exploring Madurai and visit the historic Meenakshi Temple or you can opt to visit the Gandhi Museum. Take some time to relax before boarding your overnight train to Mysore.
Day 18 Madurai to Bandipur
Arrive into Mysore in the morning and head to see Mysore Palace, the official royal residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and is the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. Later, continue onto Bandipur, your home for the night, stopping for some home cooked biryani lunch.
Day 19 Bandipur to Coonoor
Enjoy an included safari in Bandipur National Park, well known for spotting elephants, tigers, as well as macaque, civet, giant flying squirrel, striped hyena and leopard, to name a few. After your park safari, travel to the highland district of Coonoor.
Day 20 Coonoor
Coonoor is one of the three Nilgiri Hill Stations along with Ooty and Kotagiri and in the heart of India’s tea plantations, a bright and bustling place perched on a hillside. Take the famous toy train ride on the mountain railway line enjoying the fantastic mountainous scenery along the way. Visit one of the surrounding tea plantations and walk through the tea estate, learning about the process of tea making and of course there will be some tea tasting.
Day 21 Coonoor to Kochi
Leave Coonoor behind and head to Coimbatore by private vehicle, followed by a train journey to Kochi, a major port city on India’s southwest coast.
Day 22 Kochi
This morning you will take a sightseeing tour of Kochi, where you’ll pass the Dutch Palace, the Jewish synagogue and the unique sight of shore operated lift nets, more commonly known as Chinese fishing nets. Later there is the option to take a cooking class or lean the art of Kathakali dance, your tour leader can provide more details if this interests you.
Day 23 Kochi
Your tour comes to an end this morning, transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
