Concordia & K2

Concordia has possibly some of the most spectacular mountain vistas. Situated at the confluence of the Baltoro and Godwin Austen glaciers, it is an extraordinary place, dominated by K2, the world's second highest mountain. This stunning trek starts in Askole and follows the Braldu gorge to the snout of the Baltoro glacier, which we then follow to Concordia. This is one of the world’s most stunning mountain treks and is wild and remote with a scenery of unmatched grandeur.

Day 2  Islamabad to Skardu
Take a morning flight across the mountains to Skardu (weather permitting) the rest of the day is free at leisure.

Day 3  Skardu
Today is a free day to further explore Skardu, take a walk up to the remains of Skardu fort, overlooking the town and has great views of the Indus Valley. After, head to a small village which grows all its crops organically. The afternoon is free to spend as you wish, maybe opt for a jeep tour to Satpara Lake or visit the bazaar.

Day 4  Skardu to Askole
Travel northwards by jeep up the Shigar valley to Dassu, the road which mostly follows the raging Braldu River now extends to Askole, the last village on your route. Once here leave the jeeps and continue on foot to your camp.

Day 5  Askole to Jhola
This morning the porters will organise all the equipment and supplies for the journey ahead to Jhola.
The valley opens out to reveal the Biafo Glacier which flows for more than fifty kilometres from the Hispar La pass to the Braldu. Have your first taste of moraine walking as you cross the snout of the glacier and descend to your lunch spot beside the river at Korofon. The route takes you to the confluence of the Braldu and Dumordo Rivers, continue upstream to cross the river by bridge. Once across, descend to the edge of the River Braldu and follow its banks to your camp at Jhola.

Day 6  Jhola to Paiju
Today’s route mainly follows the Braldu gorge along the river bank, moving up and down according to the level of erosion and water levels. From here you will begin to see views of the fantastic granite rock shapes of Trango Towers and Cathedral. As you approach the camp, several glacially fed rivulets flow down into the main valley and you may have to use your river crossing shoes depending on water levels. The day ends with a climb away from the river to your camp at Paiju,

Day 7  Paiju
Today is a rest and acclimatisation day at Paiju. There will be an acclimatisation walk towards Paiju Peak base camp.

Day 8  Paiju to Khobursay
The walking gets harder today however the scenery becomes even more spectacular and wild as you climb onto the snout of the Baltoro glacier, and cross over to the other side. The trail climbs up and down the glacial moraine, Stunning views of granite peaks on the north side of the glacier will gradually emerge along the way. It will take a few hours to cross the glacier to Liligo. Follow a rocky trail along the edge of the Baltoro for a while to Khobursay arriving at a small campsite at the edge of the glacier.

Day 9  Khobursay to Urdukus
Cross two small side glaciers, and eventually see the Trango Towers soaring up on the north side of the valley. Spend the night near the army camp at Urdukas,

Day 10  Urdukus to Masherbrum
Follow the medial moraine, getting your first views of Masherbrum to the south. Walk past the huge ice seracs which stick out of the glacier like ice cream cones. Tonight spend your first night camping on the Baltoro glacier at Goro II, the junction of the Younghusband and Baltoro glaciers, where the night time temperature will drop quite dramatically.

Day 11  Masherbrum to Concordia
The goal is in sight, today is the final approach day to Concordia. Continue up the rocky moraine as more and more of the big peaks come into view, culminating in the appearance of K2 just before you reach your campsite at Concordia. The views all around are tremendous: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, Mitre Peak, Chogolisa and Sia Kangri are all prominent, as well as dozens of smaller peaks.

Day 12  Concordia
Today there is the opportunity to walk up the Godwin-Austen glacier to the Art Gilkey Memorial (an American geologist and mountaineer) just before K2 Base camp. As you follow the glacier towards K2 the mountain seems to grow bigger and bigger. Broad Peak rears up to your right and after about 3 hours pass Broad Peak Base Camp (there is the option to turn back here). Stop for your lunch break here and then those who are continuing carry on with K2 towering above as you get closer and closer. After lunch retrace your steps back to Concordia.

Day 13  Concordia to Goro I
Leave this magnificent place with some of the best mountain views on earth. Retrace your steps down the glacier. Today is a fairly easy walk back down to Goro I.

Day 14  Goro I to Khobursay
Follow the same trail down through the glacier to Goro I and on down to the spectacular campsite at Urdukas with great views across to Trango Towers before reaching Khobursay.

Day 15  Khobursay to Paiju
Continue your walk down the side of the glacier through Liligo, cross the glacier for one more time before stepping off the moraine onto more stable ground. Head back down to the trees and the relative comforts of Paiju campsite.

Day 16 Paiju to Jhola
The walking gets a little easier as you follow the same trail back down as you did on the way up. There maybe a couple of river crossings today. Arrive at the campsite at Jhola where you stay the night.
