TranzAlpine - Christchurch to Greymouth

The TranzAlpine is known as one of the world's top rail journeys and I'd agree it was very special and a good way to cross the country. The scenery changes from the Canterbury plains, to mountain foothills then higher peaks, all very scenic. I reckon it would be even more spectacular in winter if there's snow around. The train stops at Arthur's Pass where you have a few minutes on the platform to check out the mountain scenery and take pictures.

I liked the onboard commentary that is triggered by GPS, so comes on when you go through a certain point (so not constant). Standard seats are very comfortable with big picture windows, a USB charging port and plenty of legroom. You're given your seat number at check-in; groups tend to get the four seats facing each other and couples/singles the airline style forward facing twos. The train was about 60% full when I did it (31 Dec) so there were plenty of spare seats. There's an observation carriage with open side sections that's worth walking to to take pictures, though it can be breezy. The café on board is pretty good for coffee, snacks and light meals - like an upgraded UK train café (take cash just in case).

Bear in mind they do weigh luggage so you will need to purchase a repack bag at check-in if overweight.

Top tip: For your morning coffee, bear in mind there's nothing at Christchurch station, but you can board and go to the onboard café.
