Itinerary
Day 1 Siem Reap
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and spend the rest of the day discovering Siem Reap at your own pace.
Day 2 Temples of Angkor
Today, step into the ancient world of Angkor. Visit intricate temples and explore the crumbling towers of Ta Prohm shrouded by vines. Continue to the magical temple of Bayon, famous for its 54 towers featuring over 200 enigmatic faces carved into the stone. After a break from the midday heat, visit the 12th Century temple of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument. End the day watching the enchanting sunset over Angkor Wat, witness the sun illuminate the temple and reflect in the tranquil lotus ponds.
Day 3 Temples of Angkor
Spend a morning at leisure before stepping into the expansive temple complex of Preah Khan, a labyrinth of narrow passages, vaulted courtyards and stone carvings. The rest of the afternoon can be spent exploring further temples around the park. In the evening, enjoy an incredible performance by Phare Circus, Cambodia’s equivalent to Cirque du Soleil (see p91). Inspiring and entertaining, this is an unmissable experience when in Siem Reap.
Day 4 Tonle Sap Lake or Beng Mealea & Banteay Srey
In the high water season (approx Jul - Feb), head to nearby Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and take a boat trip to one of the stilted villages to observe local life. In the low water season, visit the remote, overgrown temple of Beng Mealea. One of the most celebrated temples of Angkor, often referred to as ‘jungle temple’ with its vine covered walls offering a lost city adventure. Later, see the beauty of the quaint temple, Banteay Srey, known for its pink sandstone carvings.
Day 5 Siem Reap to Phnom Penh
Travel by road to Phnom Penh (to save on time, flying this route is also an option), driving through the rural countryside. Upon arrival into the bustling capital, settle into your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 6 Phnom Penh
Join a tour of Phnom Penh. Begin at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Museum, a sobering and deeply moving reminder of Cambodia’s recent history. Later, visit the glittering Royal Palace and the fascinating National Museum, housing a large collection of Khmer artifacts. On your final evening, meander along the Mekong on a sunset river cruise, taking in the city skyline and watch Phnom Penh’s popular riverfront come to life.
Day 7 Phnom Penh
After a final breakfast, continue with your onward journey.
Additional Options: Why not complete your adventure with some relaxation on one of Cambodia’s beautiful beaches. Alternatively visit the lush rainforest of the Cardamom Mountains or the charming colonial towns of Kep & Kampot. Just a short journey from Phnom Penh, these options can be easily added to our Classic Cambodia tour.
