Journey through Java

Day 1  Yogyakarta to Borobudur      
Upon arrival in Yogyakarta transfer to your hotel near Borobudur.                  

Day 2  Borobudur      
Rise at 4am to watch the sun rise over Borobudur followed by a guided tour of the monument before the crowds arrive. Return to your hotel for breakfast before visiting some nearby temples and enjoying a ride on a horse-drawn carriage along the peaceful lanes to a nearby village.                  

Day 3  Borobudur to Ambarawa      
Depart early for the drive to Wonosobo, gateway to the volcanic Dieng Plateau. This upland plain is known for its beautiful scenery and ancient Hindu shrines. Take a walk through the volcanic landscapes before continuing on to the market town of Ambarawa.  

Day 4  Ambarawa to Yogyakarta      
Visit a group of small Hindu temples on the slopes of Mount Ungaran before a moderate walk to the mountaintop for enchanting views of the surrounding volcanoes. Head to Yogyakarta for dinner at a local restaurant and enjoy a traditional dance performance.  

Day 5  Yogyakarta      
Visit the Sultan’s Palace and the Taman Sari, once a royal water garden, before a short cyclo pedicab ride to the Sonobudoyo Museum. This afternoon visit the majestic Hindu temples at Prambanan.

Day 6  Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo
Depart early this morning for the four hour train to Jombang. Continue by road for four hours to the village of Ngadisari, the gateway to Mount Bromo.  

Day 7  Mount Bromo to Ijen Plateau                    
Rise at 3.30am and travel by jeep to a viewpoint where you will witness one of the most spectacular sights in South East Asia – the sun rising over Mount Bromo. Continue through the lunar-like landscape to the volcano’s caldera. Here enjoy a moderate 30 minute walk across the sea of sand and volcanic ash to reach the rim of this impressive crater. Return to your hotel for breakfast before setting off on a scenic 8-9 hour drive to the Ijen Plateau.                  

Day 8  Ijen Plateau              
After an early wake-up call, travel to Paltuding and embark on a moderate 90 minute uphill trek to the remarkable Ijen Crater. From the top enjoy striking views of the crater lake’s glistening turquoise waters and the surrounding barren but beautiful landscape. Return to your resort for the afternoon at leisure.    

Day 9  Ijen Plateau to Denpasar, Bali        
Journey to Kaliklatak Plantation to learn about rubber tapping and coffee production. Continue to Ketapang for the ferry to Bali, and transfer by road to Denpasar airport or to a beach resort. Total journey time 9-10 hours.
