New Zealand by Rail with Kuala Lumpur Stopover

Days 1-3  Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia  
Arrive in Kuala Lumpur where you will be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. Explore the traditional, yet modern capital of Malaysia where towering skyscrapers sit beside colourful temples, energetic markets and grand colonial style buildings.    

Day 4  Kuala Lumpur to Auckland, New Zealand    
Today, you will be driven to the airport in time to catch your flight.    

Days 5-6  Auckland  
Explore this scenic and walkable waterside city at your own pace. Head to the top of the sky tower for panoramic views or simply indulge in great shopping on the varied Queen Street.    

Days 7-8  Auckland to Tongariro NP  
Start your rail journey and join the Northern Explorer train as it soars over towering viaducts and winds through fertile farmland to the volcanic Central Plateau. The next day, experience a guided crossing of the iconic Tongariro alpine path for spellbinding vistas.    

Days 9-10  Tongariro NP to Wellington    
Board the Northern Explorer once again and continue to the lively capital, Wellington, known for its hip restaurants, museums and thriving arts and culture scene. Relive the magic of countless movies on a guided tour of the esteemed Wētā Workshop, known predominantly for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit. Dive head first into a world of creativity, physical effects and movie making magic.    

Days 11-12  Wellington to Blenheim    
This morning, cross the Cook Strait and connect with the Coastal Pacific train in Picton as it departs for Blenheim, the gateway to the Marlborough wine region. The next day, sample the world-renowned Sauvignon Blanc at some of New Zealand’s most famous vineyards and enjoy a deliciously prepared gourmet lunch.    

Day 13  Blenheim to Kaikōura    
Today’s rail journey winds along the pretty coastline to Kaikōura, famed for its abundant marine life. Later, partake in an exciting whale watching expedition and witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.  

Day 14  Kaikōura to Christchurch    
Reboard the Coastal Pacific and travel on to Christchurch, a city known for its beautiful green spaces. Perhaps wander the Botanical Gardens or Hagley Park and go punting down the River Avon which winds through the heart of this city.  

Days 15-16  Christchurch to Franz Josef    
Embark on the ultimate and most spectacular rail journey of this trip as you rise through the Southern Alps on the TranzAlpine train, taking in the full range of the South Island’s striking natural beauty. Collect a car in Greymouth and follow the remote west coast towards the picturesque town of Franz Josef. The next day, take an exhilarating guided glacier heli hike to uncover this totally unique environment.      

Days 17-19  Franz Josef to Queenstown
Continue your journey with an awe-inspiring drive through Mount Aspiring National Park to the adventure hub of Queenstown. Explore this stunning location and enjoy the tranquil beauty of Milford Sound on a relaxing day cruise.    

Day 20  Queenstown to Lake Tekapo    
Travel the scenic route towards Lake Tekapo and stop by the lakeside town of Wānaka en route.

Day 21  Lake Tekapo to Christchurch    
Finish your journey with a drive back to Christchurch. Spend your final evening onboard the Christchurch Tramway Restaurant for a sumptuous dinner.    

Day 22  Christchurch    
After breakfast, head to the airport in time for your onward flight.
