Retracing the Civil War

Days 1-3  Washington DC  
Fly to Washington DC. Your historical journey begins amongst the capital's fabulous memorials and museums.  

Day 4  Washington DC to Fredericksburg      
Pick up your car and depart Washington DC via Arlington National Cemetery, established during the war. Then stop at the Manassas National Battlefield Park.        

Day 5  Fredericksburg to Richmond      
Explore four famous battle sites in strategically important Fredericksburg before heading south to historic Richmond.

Day 6  Richmond to Shenandoah NP    
Uncover the rich heritage of this cosmopolitan city with a visit to the Museum of the Confederacy and explore the National Battlefield Park Civil War Center. Stop at charming Charlottesville en route to Shenandoah National Park.        

Day 7  Shenandoah NP        
Visit historic Mount Jackson, with its Confederate soldiers’ memorial and many quaint Civil War-era buildings. Alternatively, hike and enjoy the serenity in this picturesque national park.  

Day 8  Shenandoah NP to Gettysburg      
Journey through four states stopping at sites such as Martinsburg, where the audacious General Jackson made off with hundreds of Unionist locomotives, and Antietam, site of the first battle on Union soil and the single bloodiest day in US history.      
 
Days 9-10  Gettysburg to Washington DC      
Visit the site of a decisive defeat for the Confederates and later, of President Lincoln’s timeless address to a new nation that encapsulated principles of equality, freedom and unity. Head back to Washington DC for your overnight flight home.
