British Passport holders visiting Europe from 01 Jan 2021
Rules for British Citizen Passport holders visiting the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein will change from 1 January 2021.
Things you may need to do before you go include:
· check your passport validity carefully - see below
· get travel insurance that covers your healthcare
· check you have the right driving documents
· organise pet travel - contact your vet at least 4 months before you go
Please visit: https://www.gov.uk/visit-europe-1-january-2021 for further information
Passport Validity:
On the day you travel, you’ll need your passport to both:
· have at least 6 months left
· be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left)
If you do not renew your passport, you may not be able to travel to most EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
You can check whether your passport is valid for the country you’re visiting on the following website: https://www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-travel-europe-1-january-2021
To renew your passport visit: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew
To URGENTLY renew your passport visit: https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently
These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland. You can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay.
Visa Requirements:
If you’re a tourist, you will not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (This is the total amount for all countries, not per country).
Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. If you visit these countries, visits to other EU countries will not count towards the 90-day total, as long as you visit these countries first.
You may need a visa or permit to stay for longer, to work or study, or for business travel.
Details for Business Travel can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/visit-europe-1-january-2021/business-travel-extra-requirements
Proof of accommodation:
Some EU countries may require that you have proof of accommodation before entry. Proof of accommodation may need to be presented at immigration and can be in the form of a confirmation for hotels, hostels or villas OR proof of stay email for private properties.
Please visit the ‘Entry requirements’ section of the GOV.UK foreign travel advice pages, for the country that you are visiting, for full details.
