Train Travel in New Zealand
Northern Explorer
Wind through New Zealand’s North Island on a 10½ hour journey between cosmopolitan Auckland and the capital of Wellington. Trains depart several times a week, so perhaps break the journey at Waimarino, home to the magnificent Mount Tongariro, a world-renowned location for hiking the Tongariro Crossing.
Coastal Pacific
Experience one of the most beautiful stretches of New Zealand, meandering along the rugged shoreline between mountains and sea. This 6 hour journey travels between Picton, the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds and the Garden City of Christchurch. Perhaps stop in Blenheim to visit local wineries or Kaikōura, famous for its marine wildlife and whale watching.
Tranzalpine
Experience the full breadth of the South Island’s striking landscape on this stunning 5 hour inland rail journey. Between Christchurch and Greymouth, the TranzAlpine crosses rich farmlands and soaring viaducts as its route follows the Waimakariri River up through mighty gorges.
